Pesticides + chemical fertilizers = Infertile soil, stressed plants, and insect attacks.
Organic fertilizers + microbial activity = Soil fertility, healthy plants, and resistance to insect attacks.
Organic compost improves soil structure, texture, and increases the soil's water holding capacity. It also promotes soil fertility and stimulates healthy root development. If the soil is devoid of beneficial micro-organisms and nutrients, you simply will not have healthy plants. Maintaining healthy soil produces healthy plants, which are better able to withstand disease and insect damage. By feeding the soil, you provide plants with a good foundation for healthy growth.
Natural fertilizers, compost and organic materials encourage native earthworms. Earthworms are nature's tillers and soil conditioners, and manufacture great fertilizer
Weeds? Spot-spray with common full-strength household vinegar, on a sunny day. It's an organic weed killer that's safe for you and the environment.
Less than two percent of the insects in the world are harmful. Beneficial insects such as ground beetles, ladybugs, fireflies, green lacewings, praying mantis, spiders, and wasps keep harmful insects from devouring your plants. They also pollinate your plants and decompose organic matter.
Why hydrangeas change color
Contrary to popular opinion, the color of hydrangea flowers is not directly affected by soil pH. Rather, the key factor is the availability of aluminum. Acidic conditions convert the aluminum compounds normally present in the soil into a form that the shrub can absorb, resulting in a blue flower. In alkaline soil, the aluminum remains tied up in insoluble compounds. The result? Pink flowers. Hydrangeas tell it like it is. (Source: The New York Times)
